The ‘real’ reason the Liberty was strafed, bombed, rocketed, topedoed, and nearly sunk, is that her linguistics gang overheard tactical communications to the effect that desperate Israel was loading nuclear weapons on some of their A-4 skyhawks to use against the Egyptians that day, not to draw the U.S. into the war, which was a ‘given’ anyway.

If the U.S. were to come clean, and the archives ever opened, the message traffic copied by GTR-5′s crew would reflect that they’d reported the nukes being loaded onto the fighter jets, and that Israel could not take the chance that the U.S. would before the strike on Egypt, take issue with it and warn them off..which more or less is exactly what happened.

This is why GTR-5 was nearly sunk. Not to draw the U.S. into the war, but because Israel surmised that those funny looking antennae on the ship gave her the ability to know of these ‘non-existent’ nuclear weapons being loaded onto their U.S. built fighter jets.

This is the ONLY explanation that washes, all of these years later. Israel did NOT want that message to get relayed back to Washington, D.C., but it in fact did get relayed back, and the President knew that Israel was preparing to strike Egypt with nukes.

the ship was equipped with NT-66131/NT-66132 and AS-571, AS-616, and AS-899 antenna’s that fed the WLR-1 ESM receiver, and the receiver was capable of hearing everything from 50 megahertz, all the way up to 10.750 Ghz. The ESM operators had likely been one of two different sets of receiver ears on the ship that heard the whole nine yards unfolding as they were cut to ribbons by the strafing and bombing runs. At a point in the attack, the WLR-1 tuner room, and antenna feeds, were destroyed, and perhaps even the ESM operator himself. That left the linguistics guys, who also were listening.

So, GTR-5′s fundamental mission was SIGINT and ELINT, and she was doing that job there. Her sailors were aware of who was attacking them, what they were saying on the radio. They could not have been oblivious to who it was, and the Israeli command structure’s awareness of the progress of the attack on a known U.S. vessel.

What I am saying here is that GTR-5 was attacked, and she knew her attackers, she wasn’t blind to who was strafing, bombing, torpedoing her.

and they had alerted Naval command channels via H.F., that they were under attack and needed assistance, before they lost some of that ability to communicate due to the battle damage. Washington knew what the ESM and linguistics operators, aka ‘CT’s, knew.

so, anyone floating the ‘nobody knew’ story is a liar, because the sole purpose of GTR-5 was to listen and report, and that’s exactly what they were doing, until they couldn’t any longer.
